Granny Square CHICKEN

Skills/ Experience needed:

Having completed a basic and or intermediate granny square

OR

Basic crochet skills and pattern reading skills (not having yet completed a granny square is OK, use your discretion and we will meet you where you’re at!)

Provided materials:

Yellow yarn for the beak

Stuffing (you can bring yarn straps to stuff yours!)

Materials that you need to provide:

4 (minimum) colors of yarn (all the same weight)

1-3 Hook/s within the range of weight yarn you bring (see notes for clarity)

Material Notes:

  • This pattern is accessible to all kinds of yarn! In fact this is a great project for all of those tiny scraps you have held on to and just don’t know what to make with.

  • For the sake of ease, let’s stick with one of the following:  DK (#3 yarn), worsted or aran (#4 yarn) weight yarns. Please bring all 4+ colors in just ONE of the yarn weights, it will be possible but difficult to mix and match DK, worsted and aran yarns all together in one chicken.

  • Each yarn for the project should look similar, so if this is a scrap project for you, ensure the textures and thicknesses look as similar as possible.

Yarn break down by color

You’ll need a minimum of 4 colors, try to aim for complimenting, contrasting and/or colors you love!

Colors and approximate grams needed

15g for the first and 4th round (color a)

5g for the 2nd round (color b)

15g for round 3, tail and "gobble" (color c)

15g for round 5 / base color (color d)

Hook size is dependent on you, your yarn and your desired look. Try to bring a hook slightly smaller than recommended hook for the yarn weight you choose.  (general guideline for what we're doing: DK- 3.5mm, worsted- 4mm, aran- 4.5 or 5mm hook). If you have additional sizes of hooks- bring 'em on in as we might make adjustments!

We will follow a pattern that Roe created based on a selection of patterns they looked at HOWEVER, this chicken can be made from any 2 granny squares of your choosing with a tightly worked / no gap structure. Feel free to do a bit of searching yourself for a motif you love! They will work with you on the motif to achieve what you're hoping for!
